On 28 May 2016 in Greece, refugee and migrant children at Kara Tepe hospitality centre on the Greek island of Lesvos. The centre is run by the local municipality with the support of UNHCR and other partners. With its organisation and infrastructure, it serves as a model of the kind of support that Greece – with the right level of support – can offer to the refugee population. Lesvos lies close to Turkey, and was the first stopping point in Greece for thousands of refugees and migrants over the past year. Around 1,000 refugees and migrants stay in the Kara Tepe centre. UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Nana Mouskouri visited Piraeus to see the work of UNICEF partners and civil society in response to the refugee and migrant crisis that has left some 54,000 people – including more than 22,000 children – stranded in different parts of Greece. Speaking after visiting refugee centres in Athens, Ms Mouskouri said she had been very moved by what she had seen and the refugees’ stories she had heard. “These are very vulnerable people - children, women and men as well. They are very fragile. I see also on the other side that the Greek people are always very generous, and they are there to help.” Greece continues to be one of the major entry points into Europe for refugees and migrants. Since January 2015, more than 1,012,000 refugees and migrants have arrived in Greece, most having survived hazardous water crossings from Turkey. Since the implementation of new border restrictions in the Balkans and the recent EU-Turkey agreement most refugees and migrants arriving to Greece have been prevented from moving on.
